October 4, 2011 General Membership Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Susan McGinnis, Suzan Costich, Malissa Thum, Maureen Salzer, Nancy Goodman, Susan Heintz, Gabrielle Gonzales, Anna Spitz, Karen Ray, Shelly Silverman, Pam Bass, David Leighou, Mary Catherin Habeck-Leighou, Stan Kissinger, Margaret Larson, Dieter Steklis, Netzin Steklis, Rachel Villarreal, Nancy Strong, Kathy Ross, Sandra Maltry, Amy Jobst.

Kathy Ross called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Guest speaker, Dennis Conner, spoke about the Science Dept. @ St. Gregory’s and the various after school projects /programs that he is involved with, such as Robotics, Science Olympiad, and Zero Robotics.  Mr. Conner showed a short video demonstrating what is entailed in the various programs he teaches.

Following Mr. Conner’s presentation the FA General meeting began @ 7:25.

Kathy Ross welcomed everyone to the first evening FA meeting, which was a result of requests made in the survey that was distributed to St. Gregory families last spring.

The minutes from last month’s FA General meeting were approved.

Kathy Ross had everyone in the room introduce themselves.

Treasurer’s Report: Nancy Strong mentioned that the final budget figures for Homecoming were not available yet but it looked like a small profit was made.  Also, not too much has changed in the budget since last month.  Copies of the budget were distributed.

Homecoming: Gabrielle Gonzales reported that the 5th annual Homecoming was a big success and there was great community building.  The middle school parents did a great job decorating for the event.  Many of the student run clubs were well represented and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Staff Appreciation:  Amy Jobst reported information on forthcoming Staff Appreciation events, which include monthly luncheons for the faculty and in November there will be a Farmer’s Market.  Many volunteers are needed. More details to come.

Development: Susan Costich spoke about various ways to support St. Gregory, including through tax credit opportunities. Development efforts benefit everyone @ St. Gregory’s.  They will be planning some new events for fundraising competition amongst all the grades.

Rachel Villarreal is working on volunteer participation within the St. Gregory community and would like people to feel good about getting involved. Rachel also mentioned there will be another “Fall Family Gathering” day, Tuesday, Nov. 22, right before the Thanksgiving break. Students are welcome to invite parents, siblings, grandparents or any extended family members for the day’s events.

Board of Trustees: Shelly Silverman explained how the Board is mission driven and is truly trying to plan for St. Gregory’s future by considering what the school will look like in 10 years and what the needs will be. They would like to continue working on balancing the school’s community with more diversity which in turn will add to the richness of the student body. This effort would include adding more foreign exchange students to the school.

Shelly also commented that a search committee has been meeting regularly and is working arduously on seeking the next Headmaster of St. Gregory’s.

Unfinished Business: Thank you again to all the volunteers who helped with Homecoming activities.

It has been suggested that a technology class be offered to parents in order to learn more about various social websites our children utilize.  More details to come.

New Business:  The College Fair will be Wed., Oct. 5th from 1-2:30.  Over 100 college reps will be @ the school and all parents and students are welcome to attend.

Meeting was adjourned @ 8:00 p.m.

The next FA General meeting will be November 8, 2011 @ 8:00 a.m. in the El Mirador Board Room.
